Area rugs care and maintenance

Regular cleaning routine

With proper care and maintenance, your area rug will look beautiful for many years to come.

Vacuum your area rug at least weekly (if not more often) to pull up any dirt and debris. If you don't vacuum regularly, dirt particles can get ground into your rug's fibers and damage your rug over time.

For shag area rugs, you'll need to disconnect or remove the beater bar of your vacuum cleaner (instructions should be available in your vacuum's manual). Shag rugs have longer, cable-like yarns that tend to wrap around vacuum beater bars. Set your vacuum to the lowest height setting for the best results.

Handling spills & stains

Spills happen! When you have a spill, clean it up as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will soak into the fibers and could become a stain.

Blot the spill with a dry cloth or paper towel. Don't rub or scrape—this can damage the rug's fibers. Be sure to use warm water and not hot. Hot water can set the stain, which makes it even more difficult to remove.

If a stain remover is needed, blot up any excess moisture before applying. Then, work it in gently. Do not apply more stain remover than you need. Thoroughly rinse the spot with warm water and blot again with a dry cloth or paper towel.
